A sublime heritage setting

Rochester is tradition rich and architecturally diverse, creating the most photogenic and fascinating of destinations. You’ll immediately fall in love with the town’s character, from the Norman castle and the majestic cathedral to the Victorian buildings immortalised by novelist and former resident, Charles Dickens.

It’s not, however, a destination fixated on the past.

Rochester is still writing new and exciting chapters of its history. The town’s links with London have been amplified, thanks to a high speed rail service that delivers Pullman House residents to St. Pancras International in 37 minutes. The future is also taking shape at Rochester Riverside – the town’s £419 million flagship regeneration project. The iconic river frontage is fast becoming a new, attractive leisure and retail hub, adding an extra dimension to the town’s appeal and contributing to the renaissance of the wider Medway area.

Rochester’s regeneration follows in the footsteps of neighbouring Chatham. Here the Dockside Shopping Centre, Historic Dockyard attraction, The Quays, Chatham Marina and the Copper Rivet Distillery have created a major investment and opportunities zone.

Your social shortlist

Rochester delivers fresh and often unique experiences by day and night. Steeped in history and bursting with life, the High Street is unrivalled in its atmosphere. Float from independent store to boutique to book shop, seeking out vintage treasures and curiosities before refuelling at one of the town’s cafés, tea rooms and restaurants.

Night owl? The best evenings start with a pre-dinner cocktail at The Mixologist or if gin’s your thing, The Cheese Room Botanicals holds more than 100 varieties in its gin room. Eating out in Rochester never disappoints either. Intimate fine dining experiences are the specialism of The Boardroom at Café Nucleus, or head to the Café Bar below for sumptuous velvet sofas, chandeliers and champagne afternoon tea.

For more decadent luxe décor, book a table at Kaya Meze Bar – a Turkish restaurant fast becoming a favourite for its Instagram-able qualities and high-octane nights, while The George Vaults really is one-of-kind. Where else could you take part in private supper clubs, live music events and yoga in a 14th century crypt?
